Travelling. Planners or Explorers?

Viaggiare. Organizzati o Esploratori?

When we only think of taking a trip, a mechanism is triggered in our minds that leads us to draw up plans, imagine places, create itineraries, until we reach the fateful phrase Next trip I will take… It all starts here.

Every trip, as most of us know, especially experienced travellers, is divided into several stages.

  1. 1. The search for the place to visit

which is the most difficult part in my opinion.

The world is big, after all, and offers so many places to visit. After choosing the place, all that remains is to do some checking. As I mentioned in a previous article, you have to check the political, bureaucratic, visa, etc. situation, and nowadays also the health situation. It is best that for each trip you have insurance that covers any medical expenses on a large scale.

2. Stage: looking for where to arrive and where to sleep.

Depending on the place you intend to visit and the time you can spend, you immediately think of a plane, then peek at the various online platforms in search of the most convenient flight in terms of time and cost.

Once it’s been found, all that remains is to move on to the next step.

  • where to sleep.

Here we can really indulge ourselves, who doesn’t search on booking or trivago, but other platforms also offer a lot in terms of cheap and non cheap accommodation. Depending on your needs and your concept of travelling, you can really choose from many of options. Personally, I always take B&Bs. I actually go to visit the city, not the hotel. Choice made? Yes? Then all that remains is to move on to the next step.

3. Getting started

You pack your backpack or trolley, throw in what you need and you’re ready to go. Once there, all that remains is to explore the city

Let me ask you a question: Travelling: Planners or Explorers?

In which of these two categories do you put yourself. Personally, when I first started travelling, I didn’t plan but went to the ‘ritual’ places, visited the monuments that are symbols of each city. But something was missing. To go further. On one of my many trips, actually not many, I asked myself a question. How do the locals, the ordinary people, live? To find it out, I needed to go further, to go to places less explored by tourists, to visit the periphery, to visit the ‘suburbs’. I mean, if you don’t find it out, what kind of journey is it?

I think the great thing about a trip is that you don’t already know everything before you go. If there is nothing to discover, what kind of journey is it?

From Gianluca Gotto’s book: Something wonderful always happens.

It’s in the suburbs that you see how people live their daily lives, it is there that you catch the soul of the city. When I moved to the suburbs, I could see the look on people’s faces when they saw a stranger, backpack on his shoulder, with water and a battery charger, camera. I mean, taking pictures, capturing the moment of everyday life. Many would then leave you something free: A greeting. In their own language, but with a smile on their face, and I would sometimes reply in Italian.

Istanbul – Suburbs

On a trip you always have to discover as much as you can, compare yourself with different cultures. One has to test one’s own capabilities as much as possible, get out of the box and try to go beyond the city and the periphery itself, try to go OUT OF THE WALL.

Feeling happy during one of my trips.

When travelling, look for B&Bs or hostels where you can meet new people, live new experiences. Sometimes, even if you don’t speak any language, like me, you will be able to communicate and know new people. Travelling as a couple, or even alone, will definitely lead you to test your limits. In my travels, I have made many friendships that have remained even after the trip is over, and I have seen many people arrive alone and integrate easily.

Please: Travel, Travel, Travel.

Happy Travelling.
