Tartu,
a trip out of town at the time when the city is the capital of culture 2024 https://tartu2024.ee/en/
Considering, as mentioned earlier, that Tallinn in my opinion can be easily toured in four days, having a few more days one can opt for some ‘out-of-town’ excursions.

The choice fell on Tartu. Other cities can easily be visited in a day, such as Parnu, which is just over 100 km away. Estonia’s second-largest city, Tartu is less than 200 km from Tallinn. What makes this city special is that it is largely populated by students. This peculiarity has made Tartu a favourite destination for students from all over the world who are passionate about art and culture. A must-see in Tartu.
TOWN HALL SQUARE
The beating heart of the city, where hotels, clubs and shopping facilities are concentrated. Erected around 1780, it is distinguished by its elegant pink colour and very distinctive tower.

ART MUSEUM OF TARTU
Situated in the historical centre of Tartu, the building was built in 1819 on the remains of the city walls. It can be recognised by its sloping position, due to the subsidence of the river bank on which the old town stands.

TOUR OF THE STATUES
Strolling through the streets of the city, one can see many almost life-size statues, mostly located near the old town, where the city symbol is also located.

The lovers’ fountain, a young couple kissing in the rain.

Another must-see attraction in my opinion is Café Wilde, right next to it you can see the statues of Oscar Wilde and the Estonian writer Eduard Vilde sitting on a bench.
In reality, the two never met.

Tartu can be described as an interesting young city to visit as an out-of-town ‘excursion’ if you want to stop over in Tallinn. The city is easily accessible from Tallinn by train, with a train leaving every two hours or so to the city and vice versa. The station from Tartu’s Old Town is about 3 km away, which can be easily covered on foot, and part of the suburbs can be admired. In winter, as in Tallinn, the snow makes the two cities become fairy-tale landscapes, so I recommend taking this “out of town” trip.
